- She said, “I'm tired.” — Dijo: «Estoy cansada».
- He said that he was ready. — Dijo que estaba listo.
- I said hello to Maria. — Saludé a María.
- What did you say to him?
She said to me that the shop was closed. En conversación, a menudo suena más natural She told me that the shop was closed.
Tell: informar o contarle algo a alguien
- She told me the truth. — Me dijo la verdad.
- Tell us your name. — Dinos tu nombre.
- He told his parents that he was moving.
- Can you tell me the way?
- Leo said (that) he was busy. — Leo dijo que estaba ocupado.
- Leo told me (that) he was busy.
Si no mencionas a la persona, no añadas un objeto indirecto sin preposición: Leo said that…, no Leo said me that….
Errores frecuentes con say y tell
- Usar tell seguido directamente del mensaje: She told that she was tired → She said that she was tired o She told me that she was tired.
- Usar say + persona sin to: He said me → He told me o He said to me.
- Agregar to después de tell: Tell to me the answer → Tell me the answer.
- Olvidar combinaciones fijas: se dice tell a story, tell the truth, say sorry y say thank you.
También se usa tell en expresiones como tell the time (decir qué hora es) y tell the difference (distinguir la diferencia).
Ejercicios: completa con say o tell
- Can you ___ me what happened?
- She ___ that she would be late.
